“Technology: innovation by and for the person in development”: AVSI’s contribution to ECOSOC

The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has posted on its website AVSI statement “Technology: innovation by and for the person in development” as contribution to the ECOSOC High Level Segment, held in Geneva on 1 - 5 July 2013, in the framework of the Annual Substantive Session, this year focusing on "Science, technology and innovation, and the potential of culture, for promoting sustainable development and achieving the Millennium Development Goals". With its contribution, AVSI highlights that access to technological advances and a new business model capable of reaching the “base of the pyramid” are key factors to create sustainable development. “This business model will likely require new types of partnerships that are able to reach the “last mile”. Civil society in the developing world is rich with community and non-profit organizations that are essential and irreplaceable tools for providing services directly to clients at the base of the pyramid”.
