Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine on Thursday, February 24, millions of people have left their homes and found refuge in safer areas inside the country, or abroad.

AVSI immediately stepped up to help them.

We have been working in Ukraine since 2014 and thanks to our collaboration with the local organization Emmaus, when the war broke out AVSI immediately took action in the countries of arrival of refugees, in Poland, Romania, Moldova, Italy, and in Ukraine itself.

How we will use your donation:

Four months after the beginning of the conflict 54,582 people have already been assisted, of which:

  • 14,020 in Romania
  • 7,461 in Poland
  • 31,976 in Ukraine
  • 390 in Moldova
  • 735 in Italy


Our main actions

We are carrying out and planning different actions, following a flexible, multi-sector approach that we can adapt to the ongoing crisis and to the most urgent reported needs:

  • Supply and transportation of goods, within Poland and from Poland to Ukraine: lifesaving food and non-food items
  • Distribution of personal hygiene kits and COVID-19 protection kits
  • Therapy and recovery services for children, including children with disabilities
  • Support for the transportation of displaced persons from the border to transit and reception centers
  • Support for the coordination of volunteers involved in first reception operations
  • Support to the census and registration of families present in reception centers to ensure traceability and personalized support
  • Support of people with special needs: identification, accompaniment and referral of people with special needs or particular vulnerabilities, for personalized assistance (women, separated or unaccompanied minors, people with disabilities)
  • Setting up of child-friendly spaces within the temporary and short/medium-term reception centers for Ukrainian refugees
  • Translation and information services for orientation and integration
  • Organization of language courses to facilitate temporary/medium-term social integration for displaced persons in host countries
  • Cash for rent to host families in response to housing needs
  • Support to hosting families
  • Meal vouchers to be spent in the area of intervention
  • Psychosocial support and protection services
  • Cash transfer for host and internally displaced people
  • Job placement in hosting countries

Where we are working

In Ukraine

We opened an office in Lviv and Poltava.
We are also working in the regions of Černivci, Ivano-Frankivs'k, Sumy, Kharkiv and Dnipro.
Our main partners are: Caritas-Spes LvivEmmaus NGO, Good People of Bukovina, Free Trade Union of Entrepreneurs of Ukraine - VPPU, Help Group.

Ongoing activities:

  • Distribution of life-saving food and non-food items, distribution of personal hygiene kits and COVID-19 protection kits
  • Support to the coordination of volunteers involved in first reception operations
  • Support to census and registration of families present in reception centers to ensure traceability and personalized support
  • Support for special cases: identification, accompaniment and referral of cases with special needs or particular vulnerabilities (women, separated or unaccompanied minors, people with disabilities)
  • Psycho-social support and protection services for vulnerable people, refugees and internally displaced persons, and community outreach
  • Psychological intake through local psychologists of specific cases referred or identified during activities
  • Setting up of child-friendly spaces within the temporary and short/medium-term shelters for Ukrainian refugees
  • Transfer of cash or vouchers for hosts and IDPs to spend in the purchase of basic necessities
  • Distribution of home learning materials and where possible support for education in safe learning spaces
  • Payment of incentives for volunteer teachers

In Poland

AVSI works with AVSI Polska and in partnership with Caritas Lublin, the municipalities of Chelm, Wegrow and Lowicz, as well as private businesses.

Ongoing activities:

  • Refugee job placement programs (targeting and selection, job placement)
  • Organization of trainings for selected workers (Polish language, soft skills, occupational safety, etc.)
  • Social assistance and shelter activities
  • Provision of essential food and non-food items and distribution of personal hygiene kits
  • Training courses for volunteers and teachers
  • Cash-for-rent activities
  • Family food baskets
  • Placement of minors at preschools or corporate kindergartens, where they can be involved in educational, cultural and recreational activities
  • Psycho-social activities for Ukrainian children attending school

In Romania

AVSI collaborate with Asociația FDP-Protagonisti in educatie and partnered with different organizations (FaraKAIROS and Inima de Copil), with the municipalities of Suceava, Galați, Isaceea and the Romanian Government Department of Social Services in Bucharest.

Attività in corso:

  • Access to basic services and distribution of food, non-food items, health and personal hygiene kits
  • Psychosocial support and protection services for vulnerable, refugee and internally displaced persons and community outreach
  • Inclusion in school and sports activities for children
  • Identification of beneficiaries for cash-for-rent activities and job placement
  • Management of the space set up for reception at the border point
  • Transportation of food items to Ukraine (particularly Odessa)
  • Sorting of products at the border

In Moldova

In cooperation with Fundatia Regina Pacis (an association of the Diocese of Chisinau).

Ongoing activities:

  • Initial reception activities (distribution of food, non-food items, health and personal hygiene kits)

In Italy

On March 16th, an information point was activated in order to respond to the numerous requests of refugees arriving from Ukraine and to coordinate the accomodation offers by Italian families. It was created by a network of organizations and it will be run by AVSI together with Associazione Famiglie per l’AccoglienzaAssociazione San MartinoFondazione Franco VergaAssociazione I Bambini dell’Est, the Ukrainian NGO Emmaus, and Medici in Famiglia Impresa Sociale.

Ongoing activities:

  • Information and support service in the process of reception and integration of Ukrainian families with host communities
  • Help desk for documentation matters, to provide information/guidance/assistance
  • Matching between the availability of accommodation in families and the accommodation needs of refugees
  • Support to the daily needs of Ukrainian refugees, housed in families or apartments made available by private citizens; cash transfer is the preferred method to directly support the families in paying for food and non-food items, medical/pediatric visits, contribution to rent / utilities in the case of accommodation in apartments and not in families
  • Psychological support for Ukrainian families, with particular attention to refugee women and minors, for the traumas caused by the conflict, flight, separation from their families and their country
  • Support to refugee children and teenagers through educational activities for the inclusion of children in schools, group, educational, recreational, play and sports activities
  • Carrying out of vocational orientation activities, language and vocational training courses for adults, in the perspective of a work integration
  • Training, support and accompaniment to host families, in their relationship and daily life with Ukrainian refugees
