AVSI has launched the project “Multisectoral Integrated Emergency Response for Communities Affected by Armed Group Violence in Port-au-Prince and Rapid Humanitarian Assistance for Victims of Armed Conflict and Health Epidemics in the Artibonite” in Haiti funded by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO).
The project aims to mitigate the risks and consequences of armed violence on affected populations in the Port-au-Prince Metropolitan Area (ZMPAP) with humanitarian protection, food security and nutrition interventions targeting communities affected by armed group violence. Through the Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) for Humanitarian Protection, Food Security and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (EPHAL) in the Artibonite Department, in consortium with ACTED and IMPACT, the project aims to respond to the needs of populations displaced by armed conflict and epidemics, helping to reduce mortality and morbidity among the displaced.
The initiative is part of the RRM, a rapid response mechanism for major humanitarian crises. The project is implemented according to AVSI's own methodology, which places beneficiaries at the center of the process, helping them become protagonists of their own change. The project also relies on the creation of local networks involving communities, local authorities and the Haitian government to promote concerted and sustainable action.
The goals of the project: protection, food, nutrition and health assistance
- increased protection for 8,970 people affected by violence and human rights abuses, with specific actions to improve their safety and well-being.
- food assistance to 17,000 food-insecure people, with disribution of cash and food vouchers to cover daily needs.
- nutritional assistance for 1,600 malnourished children aged 0-5 years and 300 pregnant and lactating women, through mobile clinics offering appropriate care and nutritional monitoring.
- health assistance for 4,300 people at risk of epidemics, specifically through EPHAL interventions to prevent the spread of disease.
This project is a comprehensive and integrated response to the current crisis in Haiti, strengthening the resilience of the most vulnerable populations and improving their access to essential protection, nutrition and food security services.
