AVSI and the European Union strengthen food security in northwest Haiti with sustainable and inclusive solutions. A project to nourish hope

In northwest Haiti, where hunger is rising and poverty is worsening, AVSI has implemented the project "Sustainable agricultural development – A resilient approach to nutritional and food security within the communities of Jean-Rabel and Mole Saint Nicolas – EuropeAid/156669/DD/ACT/HT", funded by the European Union and active from 2022 to 2025.

The initiative aims to improve the food and nutritional security of thousands of families by combining emergency interventions with sustainable development solutions.

The project is based on the Nexus approach, which links humanitarian aid, development, and peacebuilding. In practice, this means acting immediately to address urgent needs—such as malnutrition—while also looking to the future by strengthening communities’ ability to face crises independently and sustainably.

Agriculture, circular economy, and decent work

The project supported 1,500 families with home gardens, improved seeds, and agricultural tools. It promoted the circular economy through six food processing centers that produce high-nutritional-value flours using local ingredients. Thanks to the Cash for Work program, 250 landless individuals participated in building 3,500 meters of irrigation canals. This approach, which provides compensation for public utility work, generates immediate income while also strengthening the community’s agricultural infrastructure.

Malnutrition prevention and care

The project trained 4,410 parent leaders to monitor malnutrition cases and raise awareness among families. Through door-to-door activities, over 3,000 families were guided in self-assessing their diets and promptly reporting critical cases.

Stories of change: Watch the video

In the video, farmers, parents, and workers share how the project has improved their daily lives: more abundant harvests, children recovering from malnutrition, new sources of income, and stronger communities. Their words show the tangible impact of an approach that combines emergency response with development.
