A prize worth

On March 12, 2025, Viola Niyongere, a talented entrepreneur from Bujumbura, was recognized for her remarkable dedication to women’s entrepreneurship. Among six standout women entrepreneurs, Viola’s business was awarded the 'Coup de Cœur' prize -  an acknowledgment voted for by the audience at the launch of the 2025 promotion of Equipe Europe's Women's Network in Burundi. The event, organized as part of International Women's Rights Day celebrations, gathered ambassadors from the European Union countries, the United States, government officials, women leaders, and representatives of local and international NGOs

A business built on creativity and sustainability

Viola, a resident of the Heha neighborhood in Kamenge, Bujumbura, is the founder of Akeza mu Beza, a thriving business specializing in crafting and selling sandals made from recycled fishing lines and old tires. Established in 2016, her business embodies creativity and environmental consciousness - transforming discarded materials into stylish, durable footwear. From humble beginnings, producing only 10 pairs of sandals a month, Viola’s workshop now boasts an impressive output of 300 pairs monthly. She employs five women and one man, offering them a stable income and valuable skills.

The project that paved the way

Viola’s journey to success was propelled by her involvement in the two-years Support for Women Entrepreneurs in Agri-Business and Crafts project, funded by the European Union and implemented by AVSI Foundation in partnership with Kaz'O'zah Keza. Through this initiative, Viola received crucial business training, mentorship, and essential equipment, including a sewing machine, sanding machine, and work furniture. This support equipped her not only with tools but also with the knowledge to scale her business sustainably.

Big dreams for the future

Reflecting on her achievement, Viola shared her aspirations:

I want my company to extend its exports beyond Burundi's borders and make a name for itself in the fashion industry. I’m also aiming to import raw materials and invest in modern equipment to improve production and branding.
