Côte d’Ivoire is committed to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4.1: ensuring equitable, universal access to quality primary education by 2030.

Despite progress in 2023 - with a primary school completion rate of 78.61% - the education system still faces major challenges: deteriorating infrastructure, lack of teaching materials, insufficient teacher training, and limited family engagement. Civil registration issues further hinder full school enrollment.

To address these needs, AVSI has launched REUSSIR – Strengthening the Quality of the Primary Education System in Côte d’Ivoire, implemented with funds from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS).

Over the next four years, the program will involve 800 schools and 20 Regional Education Directorates across 18 regions, in collaboration with the Ivorian Ministry of Education. Key actions include:

  • Rehabilitation of 165 school buildings
  • Continuous teacher training
  • Support for educational governance to improve system management and service quality
  • Access to safe water and sanitation: 150 latrines and 150 new water points
  • Violence prevention in schools
  • Mobile libraries and remedial courses
  • Strengthening school management committees (COGES)
  • Support for civil registration of children

These efforts will benefit 192,000 students, 4,800 teachers, 60,000 parents, 800 parent committees, and over 380 institutional staff, creating safe, inclusive, and quality learning environments.

Activities began in November with a national planning workshop in Yamoussoukro, bringing together AVSI staff, partner organizations (CEVI, INTERLIFE, CLIRAP), and Ministry representatives to align work plans and monitoring tools.
