The European Union, through the EU Emergency Response Programme to Strengthen Ecuador's Penitentiary System (EURESP), in cooperation with the government, organized the "II Conferencia Internacional de Consenso sobre Seguridad Penitenciaria e Integral" in Quito, Ecuador (7-8 March 2024).
The meeting was aimed at promoting opportunities of discussion among different social actors on the most urgent security challenges that Ecuador is facing, in order to share experiences and to identify effective and applicable solutions to build a more secure and peaceful environment.
The event was attended by the President of the Republic of Ecuador, Daniel Azin Noboa, along with many important authorities, academics, national and international security experts and representatives of civil society organisations including AVSI (final press release of the event).
Giampaolo Silvestri, AVSI Secretary General, described our work with the APAC prison model and the lessons learned through this experience, that has marked AVSI's work in Latin America in many significant ways and has indirectly contributed to our involvement in the EURESP project in Ecuador in partnership with IILA, and funded by the European Union.
