In recent days, we have been closely monitoring the evolving situation in Syria on an hourly basis through the Vatican nuncio, the Italian representation, our network of local contacts, and our colleagues in the field. We are assessing the best ways to continue supporting the beneficiaries of our projects while ensuring the safety of our staff.
In Aleppo, Latakia, and Damascus, where our offices are located, approximately 24 staff members are currently working as circumstances allow.
We continue to provide support to the three hospitals involved in the "Open Hospitals" project - two in Damascus and one in Aleppo. These facilities remain functional thanks to the dedication of the few remaining doctors, nurses, and staff. Moreover, four of the five activated dispensaries are still operational, delivering essential primary healthcare services to people in need.
For us, as for everyone, it is difficult to imagine what might happen next. However, our presence throughout the region - with offices and staff in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, and Palestine - provides us with a comprehensive perspective. This allows us to remain particularly attentive to the complex dynamics of the area and ready to respond to the needs of the population, wherever and however possible.
