AVSI has launched a project with the organization Pro Terra Sancta to raise awareness among young people and local communities about the beauty of Jordan’s artistic and cultural heritage and its history.
The goal is to enhance collective memory as a tool for encounter, identity, and hope.

The project aims to promote the safeguarding of Jordan’s cultural heritage, with a focus on Christian sites, by offering educational and training programs to 1,200 high school and university students, as well as scouts, to encourage the rediscovery of shared roots as a path to encounter and dialogue.

Training of educators:
Selection of 6 young Jordanian graduates in archaeology, art, and history, who will take part in a 4-month training program provided by the Jordan Museum and the Petra National Trust.

Development of the “Heritage Education” program

Research and content development, creation of promotional materials (such as brochures and guides), planning of the calendar and educational itineraries with visits to the sites to be promoted, including:

  • Mount Nebo, one of the holiest sites in Jordan: according to biblical tradition, it is the place from which Moses saw the Promised Land. Today, it is a pilgrimage and tourist site with a Byzantine basilica and a panoramic view of the Jordan Valley.
  • Mukhayyat, an archaeological site near Mount Nebo, known for its Byzantine churches and ancient mosaics. Less known and less developed, it will be the focus of enhancement and research efforts.
  • Madaba, known as the “City of Mosaics,” is home to the famous Madaba Map, the oldest cartographic mosaic of the Holy Land. It is a cultural and religious center of great importance.

Implementation of the “Heritage Education” program
in selected Latin Patriarchate schools, involving around 1,200 high school and university students, as well as scouts.

Our cultural heritage protection projects aim to make local communities active protagonists, not just passive beneficiaries. The protection and promotion of cultural heritage must be seen as central to a broader model of development cooperation, as it generates multiplier effects across various dimensions of the human person.
