On March 29-30, 2021, the fifth Brussels Conference on “Supporting the future of Syria and the region” will be hosted by the European Union. The conference will take place virtually following the safety measures of Covid-19. Additional Syria-related conference side events will take place the week before.
Over the years, the Brussels conferences have become an opportunity to pursue and deepen the dialogue between civil society, refugee-hosting countries, the European Union, and the United Nations, and to reassert the international community's continued support to the UN and the UN Special Envoy's efforts for a negotiated political solution to the Syrian conflict in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
2021 marks the 10th anniversary of the Syrian crisis. There are at least 488,000 school-aged Syrian refugee children in Lebanon and more than half of them are still out of school.
“Back to the Future II” NGO consortium; AVSI, Terre des Hommes Italy in Lebanon, and War Child Holland in Lebanon, with the support of Seenaryo, will bring its participation to the side event taking place on March 26, 2021 at 9:00 AM CET TIME.
Since 2019, “Back to the Future” II project promotes enrolment and improves retention in the formal education system of refugee children impacted by the Syrian Crisis and vulnerable children from host communities in Lebanon. Over the course of three years, the program has been planned to directly benefit more than 22,648 vulnerable Lebanese and Syrian children. Currently the project is being implemented in its second phase. This project is funded by the European Union in Lebanon, through the EU Regional Trust Fund in response to the Syrian crisis, the EU Madad Fund.
In Lebanon since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and in line with the Government’s decision to shut down all educational institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) played a fundamental role in finding new innovative solutions to face the disruption of education services, by complementing the efforts of formal education institutions in facing the new challenges. One successful example of mainstreaming distant learning is represented by the project Back to the Future.
During its participation in the conference, the “Back to the Future II” consortium will present the Early Childhood Education remote learning program based on I Learn From Home program developed by Seenaryo Organization. Back to the Future side event will center around (1) a consortium presentation of the CB- ECE I Learn From Home from Back to the Future project, distance learning program: concept, challenges, impact and recommendations; (2) a presentation from the local partner – collaboration in building the methodology and throughout the implementation; and (3) a motion picture through local field testimonies. The event will host the participation of European Union Delegation in Lebanon and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (to be confirmed).
