  • Key Biodiversity Area: Reserva Científica Ébano Verde | Ebano Verde Scientific Reserve
Project: Update of the Management Plan for the Ebano Verde Scientific Reserve, Dominican Republic
Host grantee: Fundación para el Mejoramiento Humano (PROGRESSIO)
Project summary: This project is strengthening the management of the Ébano Verde Scientific Reserve by updating the protected area’s management plan to include strategies such as environmental education and ecotourism promotion important to achieving conservation targets.

Our site visit will take us to the Fernando Domínguez Education and Research Centre at the Ébano Verde Scientific Reserve in El Arroyazo, Constanza municipality, La Vega province. We will meet with local stakeholders to discuss the process of updating the management plan for the protected area. The visit will also include a guided tour of the nursery, where we will see what is being done to cultivate Dominican magnolias and other plant species, followed by a walk along the El Arroyazo ecotourism trail.
  • Key Biodiversity Area: Parque Nacional La Humeadora
Project: Management Planning and Implementation in Parque Nacional Montaña La Humeadora, Dominican Republic
Host grantee: Instituto Dominicano de Desarrollo Integral, Inc. (IDDI)
Project summary:  This project is strengthen management of, and reducing agricultural encroachment into, Parque Nacional Montana La Humeadora by updating the park’s management plan, supporting agroforestry in buffer zone communities, preparing species conservation action plans, building ecotourism capacity and strengthening park guard capacity.

During the site visit, we will explore the Haina Duey micro-watershed, which supplies water to the city of Santo Domingo through the Haina Duey water intake. This region has benefitted from the implementation of projects that have led to a conscious shift in local communities and productive organisations from short-cycle open-air farming to learning and developing the sustainable model of analogue forestry on farms in the buffer zone of the La Humeadora National Park. The visit will include a guided tour by community leaders, and we will have an opportunity to exchange experiences with them about their involvement in the project and the social, economic, and environmental benefits derived.

19.30: Final dinner

Informal gathering. Let’s come together to eat and enjoy each other’s company one last time before saying goodbye.
