DRR Specialist will support the development of climate change–related risk maps in Dadaab, as well as the implementation of priority actions aimed at reducing community vulnerabilities in agriculture and food security, in collaboration with an external consultant and the project team. The Specialist will assist the Project Manager and the GIS Technician in collecting community-level information on climate change, facilitating participatory processes to identify impact chains, and analyzing compound hazards present in the area to support risk assessment. Based on these analyses, the Specialist will contribute to defining and implementing priority actions together with communities and local authorities. The DRR Specialist will also work closely with the Social Technician to ensure the effective integration of technical components and community-based knowledge gathered in the field into the risk mapping process.
Disaster Risk Management Expert
Main tasks and responsibilities
Collect and review secondary data related to climate change and disaster risk.
• Collect community-level data for climate change risk assessment (hazards, vulnerabilities, and exposure) through fieldwork with project beneficiaries.
• Organize and manage databases, ensuring data quality, consistency, and validation.
• Support the development and application of methodologies for risk analysis.
• Assist in the analysis of hazards, exposure, and vulnerabilities within the project area.
• Conduct awareness-raising and training sessions for communities on climate change and disaster risk reduction.
• Facilitate participatory processes with communities to ensure inclusive data collection and analysis.
• Work with communities to identify impact chains and define priority adaptation actions related to agriculture and food security.
• Coordinate the validation of risk maps with communities, in collaboration with the DRR Specialist.
• Support the implementation of priority actions related to agriculture and food security together with the communities.
•Monitor implementation of DRR and climate adaptation activities and report on progress
•Coordinate with local authorities, humanitarian actors, and technical partners.
• Build the capacity of community groups and local stakeholders on DRR and climate adaptation
Essential Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Disaster Risk Management, Environmental Studies, Geography, Urban Planning, or a related field.
• At least 3 years of relevant professional experience in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), climate change adaptation, or related fields.
• Proven experience in community-based projects, preferably in informal settlements or humanitarian/emergency contexts.
• Experience in conducting risk assessments, including hazard, vulnerability, and exposure analysis.
• Demonstrated experience in participatory approaches and community engagement.
• Experience working with NGOs, UN agencies, or international organizations is an asset
• Good understanding of climate change concepts and DRR frameworks (e.g., Sendai Framework).
• Experience in data collection tools (e.g., Kobo, ODK) is an asset.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Basic knowledge of AutoCAD is an asset
• Familiarity with national DRR and climate policies and frameworks.
