The earthquake that struck Venezuela’s northern coast on 24 June 2026 also damaged school buildings, sanitation facilities and water access points, disrupting educational activities for hundreds of students.

AVSI aims to accompany the network of diocesan schools run by the Catholic Church in La Guaira throughout the 2026–2027 school year. For children and adolescents, attending school means more than learning: it means being in a safe environment, where trained adults can guide them as they grow, recognise their needs and help them address them.

School after the earthquake: the situation in La Guaira

Following the earthquake in June 2026, several educational facilities in La Guaira State sustained damage, making it more difficult to resume regular classes. In addition to school buildings, the earthquake affected essential services such as water supply and sanitation facilities, which are necessary to ensure that children can attend school safely.

Returning to the classroom means more than reopening school buildings. It means resuming interrupted activities, reuniting with teachers and classmates, and returning to familiar places after an event that has changed the daily lives of thousands of families.

The project in La Guaira's schools

As part of the 2026–2027 Tents Campaign, AVSI is working with the network of diocesan schools run by the Catholic Church to help them start and carry out the 2026–2027 school year in La Guaira State.

Planned activities include:

  • rehabilitating four educational spaces damaged by the earthquake;
  • restoring access to water and sanitation facilities;
  • distributing school supplies;
  • providing psychosocial support activities for children and adolescents;
  • delivering training for teachers and families on education in emergencies and child protection.

The aim is to enable students to return to school in safe, functional environments suited to learning activities.

What your donation will make possible

  • The rehabilitation of four educational spaces damaged by the earthquake, including the restoration of school facilities, access to water and sanitation services;
  • The distribution of school kits and teaching materials;
  • The organisation of psychosocial activities and child-friendly spaces where children can rebuild relationships and resume everyday activities;
  • Training for teachers and families on education in emergencies, alongside the strengthening of school protection committees.

Who you will help

  • 1,100 children and adolescents;
  • 50 teachers and school staff members;
  • 100 family representatives involved in protection activities;
  • 5,000 members of the educational community reached indirectly.

In La Guaira, reopening schools means restoring the spaces and essential services children need to return to learning. Repairing classrooms, restoring water access and rehabilitating sanitation facilities will help students, teachers and families return to familiar school environments.
