In the provinces of Ngozi, Kayanza and Bujumbura, AVSI implements the Isoko Irama project, working alongside small- and medium-scale producers in the banana, mushroom and honey value chains.

Bananas are an essential crop for many rural families in Burundi, yet many banana plantations produce below their potential. Mushroom and honey producers also face technical constraints, limited access to financial services and a lack of resources to grow their businesses.

Through grants, applied research and field-based advisory services, the project helps producers improve their production and manage their economic activities. It also facilitates access to credit, savings and other financial services that can help agricultural businesses grow.

The project also includes activities to prevent child malnutrition. In the communities involved, nutritional screenings are conducted for children aged 6 months to 5 years to identify cases of malnutrition early and facilitate referral and follow-up at community level.
