The theme of the 2017 session of ECOSOC High-Level Segment is ambitious: “Eradicating Poverty in All its Forms and Dimensions through Promoting Sustainable Development, Expanding Opportunities and Ad-dressing related Challenges.” Held on an annual basis (this year the session is held in New York July 17-20), the High-level Segment represents the culmination of ECOSOC's annual cycle of work and convenes a diverse group of high-level representatives from Government, the private sector, civil society and aca-demia for policy dialogue, review and recommendations on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Develop-ment and other internationally agreed Development Goals.

Ezio

AVSI-USA President Ezio Castelli represented AVSI, a non-governmental organization in generalconsultative status with ECOSOC since 1996, at the 2017 session of ECOSOC High-Level Segment. During the event, AVSI is presenting a statement about this year’s theme, which has been translated in many languages and has been made available to the participants. The document highlights the principles that inspire AVSI in its work in the field. Based on 45 years of experience, AVSI has “developed” a unique way to design and implement measures for sustainable development with a particular attention to the needs of today’s men and women, and is happy to share it with all stakeholders.

What is ECOSOC?

Established in 1945 by the UN Charter, as one of the six main organs of the United Nations, The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is at the heart of the United Nations system to advance the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental. It is the central platform for fostering debate and innovative thinking, forging consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals. It is also responsible for the follow-up to major UN conferences and summits.

Building on its coordination role within the UN system, ECOSOC is a gateway for UN partnership and participation by the rest of the world. It offers a unique global meeting point for productive dialogues among policymakers, parliamentarians, academics, foundations, businesses, youth and 3,200+ registered non-governmental organizations.
