During the past years the state of Oaxaca in Mexico has been struggling to improve its educational system. Thanks to a project co-funded by the European Union AVSI has been implementing since 2012 initiatives supporting studentsAlfonso is the youngest of 5 brothers. His mother is very busy and spends almost the entire day working. She is not staying at home and therefore the children are left on their own. Alfonso is being looked after by the brothers… He loves soccer, like many other Mexican children, and when he plays with the ball, a smile appears on his face in spite of all difficulties. In fact he has problems of adaptation, learning, socialization and he struggles staying in group and following rules.
Thanks to a project co-funded by the European Union AVSI has been implementing since 2012 initiatives supporting students in order to reduce the negative effects of a poor educational system. The core activities are geared toward the involvement of educators, teachers and parents in the definition of the education sector policies of Oaxaca.
One of the main working aspect of the project is the importance being put on the teaching methods: the parents and the teachers work together in the development of the educational tools and topics giving particular attention to the social inclusion of the children, innovative teaching methods that put the person at the centre of any educational process.
Few months ago, Alfonso joined one of the education centers managed by AVSI in the State of Oaxaca. From that moment on his school performances have improved, his class participation is more active and finally he is so happy to play peacefully with his classmates. Many other children like Dulce, Lisander, Carlos amongst others, have improved their school performances and their social activities thanks to AVSI’s support.
