AVSI, as a special partner of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDNS), attended the conference “Beyond the Millennium Development Goals: Shaping the post-2015 development agenda”, heldin Paris on March 18th .The panel of eminent leaders included Pascal Canfin, French Deputy Minister for Development, Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director of UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Laurence Tubiana, founder and director of IDDRI & Co-Chair of the SDSN Leadership Council, and was chaired by Ghassan Salamé, Dean of the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA), Sciences Po.
The debate focused on key questions such as: What have the MDGs achieved and what are the lessons learned? What are the major global sustainable development challenges the world will face in the coming years? How can the post-2015 development agenda address them? How can problem solving for sustainable development be promoted?
During the meeting, it was presented the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon in August 2012. Headed Directed by Professor Jeffrey Sachs, the Solutions Network mobilises scientific and technical expertise from academia, civil society, and the private sector to accelerate practical problem solving for sustainable development and to promote transformational solutions initiatives around the globe.
This event was also the occasion for agreeing on the next steps to take within AVSI-SDSN cooperation. In particular, J. Sachs will make an intervention in the event “The last mile: at the heart of development”, focused on the meaning of development and sharing of experiences, that AVSI is organizing in Brussels on May 14 th.
