At the end of October, despite difficult weather conditions due to the cyclone Sandy, Ms. Heidi Klum, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, together with other UNICEF representatives, visited AVSI activities in Cité Soleil. At the Center for Psychosocial Support of Croix Blue, amb. Klum attended some activities with children and could not resist the temptation to leaf through some books in the library with them and at the end got involved in their dance and songs.
Then the delegation visited the artisan workshop Atelier Soleil 21, amb. Klum asked more questions about fashion products (clothes and accessories realized with the perlage technique and iron work). She showed particular interest in the story of the project, from the origin to the achievement of current results.
UNICEF representatives highlighted that AVSI’s projects are “a good example of effective development activities despite being carried out in the most degraded area of Port-au-Prince”.
AVSI’s presence in Haiti began in 1999 with a 5 year program to support the newly created School of Agronomy at the University Notre Dame d’Haiti (UNDH) in the southern city of Les Cayes.
In 2004, AVSI activities in Haiti expanded to the capital Port-au-Prince, specifically to two critical neighborhoods, Cité Soleil and Martissant, both shanty towns sadly renowned for their poverty, violence, and insecurity. In order to stop violence and crime, AVSI is carrying out an intervention with young people involved in armed gangs supporting their desire to leave them, through educational activities and vocational training.
