“Árvore da Vida”, or “Tree of Life”, a joint venture between AVSI and FIAT Brazil in the area surrounding the FIAT plant in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, was selected to be presented at CSRAmericas 2012, a global event organized by The Multilateral Investment Fund (FOMIN) of the Inter-American Development Bank.

The CSRAmericas is the largest CSR Conference in Latin America and the Caribbean each year, attracting over 1,000 participants from leading businesses, governments and civil society and this year will take place in Quito, Ecuador, from 21 to 23 May 2012.

Marco Antonio Lage, Director Corporate Communications, FIAT-Chrysler, Brazil will present AVSI-FIAT’s experience, results and lessons learned within the “Árvore da Vida” project in the panel “Bridging the Skills Gap”, 22 May, 2:30 – 4:00 p.m.

Moderator: Carmen Pages-Serra, Unit Chief Labor Markets, IBD

Panelists:

• Branka Minic, Director Global Corporate & Government Affairs, ManpowerGroup, United States

• Alejandra Solla, Directora Adjunta, Fundación SES, Argentina

• Marco Antonio Lage, Director Corporate Communications, FIAT-Chrysler, Brazil

• Donaciano Domínguez Espinosa, Deputy Coordinator, Servicio Nacional de Empleo, Secretaría del Trabajo y Previsión Social, Mexico

“Árvore da Vida” developed out of the interest of FIAT Brazil to invest in the educational resources of the communities surrounding its plans in the hope of contributing to a reduction in violence and increasing the availability of qualified employees. Since 2004, Árvore da Vida has provided a social and educational path for youth that effectively keeps young people engaged in school and prepared for the transition to work.

From having a handful of employees coming from the vicinity of its plant in Belo Horizonte, today FIAT employs over 1,000 youth from the neighborhood.

Some results:

Improvement in the life conditions of almost 13,550 highly vulnerable people.

1,300 youth successfully inserted into labor market.

Methodology:

Community development approach, integrated across sectors, and participatory.

Specific attention to professional training and introduction to the world of work.

Lessons learned:

Partnership among public, private businesses & communities is essential for CSR.

Corporate Social Responsibilty as part of businsses model: with Árvore da Vida, Fiat has concentrated their CSR strategies into the issue of youth employment and in its factory area. From a logic of philanthropy, Árvore da Vida has turned into a sustainable development intervention.

Priority of education and youth employment: the project is focused on youth and work. Engagement in the sector cannot be limited to job placement initiatives but must enter into education more broadly, helping youth to recognize the value of education and the dignity of work. The private sector responds enthusiastically to this proposal: 1,200 youth have received stable contracts from FIAT and firms in its supply chain.

Fruits of partnership can be unexpected: Other small business activities have been started as a result. The Cooperarvore Cooperative is a women-owned business that recycles discarded materials from the FIAT factories in Brazil and produces bags, key chains and other gadgets.

Centrality of the person: sustainable development always originates in the person: manager, entrepreneur, public administrator or person living in poverty. It is this aspect that allows initiatives to reach the “base of the pyramid.”

SOTAS is 10 years old, and to celebrate invited the friends from within Lithuania and without who have accompanied the journey and continue to support them.

The Lithuanian partner of the AVSI network marked the important milestone with a concert of traditional songs linked to the “Singing Revolution”, which was born in response to the Russian occupation. The folk songs mark some of the most significant moments of the country’s history, and are the expression of a people with a deep cultural and national identity, closely tied to its homeland. The concert ended with some contemporary songs to represent the infinite desire of all men and women, which does not die with the arrival of independence.

Established in April 2002 as a non-governmental organization in Vilnius, Lithuania, SOTAS was born from the desire of some friends to respond to emerging needs and urgencies in particular among young people and to accompany families experiencing difficulties in their daily life. Currently, projects continue to focus on educational activities for families, especially those with adopted children or families at risk.

In accordance with their beginning, the organizers also structured the concert around a friendship, that among the choir and orchestra members and the association. The finale of the performance was a beautiful tango performed by three young people from Utena, a town about 60 miles from Vilnius, who with their families, benefit from AVSI and SOTAS’s Distance Support Program.

From the opening slide show documenting the ten years of history to the musical performances and the closing reception, the entire evening showed careful planning and attention to duty that testifies to the daily way of working.

Over 250 people attended the event, including beneficiaries, employees, sponsors and other collaborators met along the 10 years. SOTAS staff member and concert organizer Eglė Basytė explained three messages behind their choice of music:

1) A friendship is what makes us regain interest in our traditions.

2) Our tradition is not just some sort of echo from the past, but is surviving and can be the base from which our interest and creativity take off now.

3) The people who are really making a change in history are those who are seeking ideals and searching for meaning in life.

“In recent days, the U.S. embassy in Kenya issued a warning, stating that there was a strong risk of a major attack by al-Shabab militants in Nairobi that could hit government buildings and large hotels. Thus, the danger was in the air in the last few days, and we had been told that what is happening in Somalia could have repercussions in Kenya “.

Leo Capobianco, head of AVSI in Kenya, says this in an interview with IlSussidiario.net after the two bombings in Kenya and Nigeria yesterday. One dead and fifteen wounded is the provisional report on the explosion of a grenade inside the Maison de Dieu du Miracle church in Nairobi, while the toll of the attack that took place in the Bayero University in Kano, northern Nigeria, is at least twenty people.

What is behind these attacks?
Attacks of this type are usually seen in villages near the border of Kenya, especially in the Dadaab refugee camp, but it is not the first time that they occur in other parts of the country as well. The goal of the attacks is to create panic and fear among the people, and especially to make the government change their mind about the raid they are carrying out in Somalia to eliminate the Somali branch of Al Qaeda. What we are witnessing, therefore, is a kind of revenge but it affects innocent people who have nothing to do with what is happening.

What can you tell us about the situation of Christians in Kenya and Central Africa?
In Kenya, there are still a lot of Christians, far more than in other neighboring countries like Sudan or Somalia. It is clear, however, that there is an interest in destabilizing the country and sending a strong message to the Christians. Here the Muslim community is the weakest, and is located mainly in coastal areas, while the missionary work of the Catholics still lives on in the interior of the country, now for more than a hundred years.

In your opinion, how is the situation changing after the Arab Spring?
Mine is a very personal opinion, based primarily on the various meetings I have had with the refugees in Dadaab. Talking to people, one gets the feeling that there is a fundamentalist minority which, in the name of the jihad, creates tense situations like the present one, with the aim of controlling the political and economic spheres of Somalia, but then, when one goes to meet the Muslim community, one is always under the impression that one is speaking to very simple people, not interested and not in favor of these things, and indeed fleeing their country because they could not take any more of it.

Thus, you believe that the real goal of the terrorists is economic and political control?
There is always this feeling that behind the war against the Christian world there is another goal, namely to control resources and politics. The number of Somalis who decide to invest in various economic activities is also growing dramatically. With the money from the International Monetary Fund, it seems there is more and more money from various sources that allow the Somali rich to invest in economic activities and other things. The result is a sort of “invasion” from an economic point of view. In just one example, seven years ago I went to visit a town that is very far from the border with Somalia, known as one of the most Christian towns in Kenya. Today in that same town, there are many shops and businesses in the hands of the Somalis, so much so that many think that the Somalis are the ones who determine the market because, since they have substantial resources, they can lower the prices and undermine other local activities.

In a sign of the road to rebuilding despite political tensions, St. Mary’s University in Juba, South Sudan, opened the 2012-2013 academic year on May 7 with a ceremony inaugurating a building for the 35 students enrolled in the Faculty of Education.

For these students, this will be the first year of the official curriculum—being developed by AVSI in conjunction with education experts from the Permanent Centre for Education (PCE)—after completing a ‘zero’ year of preparations designed to accommodate for the wide variety of academic backgrounds of the students.

The newly-constructed facility for the School of Education was blessed by Most Reverend Paulino Lukudu Loro, Archbishop of Juba, in the presence with invitees including the guest of honor, Hon. Dr. Peter Adwok Nyaba, Minister of Higher Education, Alberto Piatti, AVSI Secretary General, Mauro Giacomazzi of the PCE, the staff, students, and other local dignitaries and international guests.

In his address for the occasion, Archbishop Loro underlined the most important factor: “Today’s celebration is not for the new walls built, but for the students, the teachers, and parents: it is their ‘construction’ that we are celebrating.”

Piatti commented on the long history of AVSI’s relationship with the people of South Sudan, beginning with the management of camps for Sudanese refugees in Uganda, which led to multi-year healthcare, water and sanitation, formal and informal education programs in Eastern Equatoria (Torit and Isohe), continuing now along with the development of the recently-founded university.

The Faculty of Education expands the original faculties of social work and rehabilitation sciences at St. Mary’s University. The history of the education program began in 2009 when, in order to address the lack of trained teachers, Archbishop Loro requested the involvement of AVSI to found a faculty to train and certify primary teachers. AVSI took up the challenge involving the technical expertise of the Uganda-based PCE.

With this intervention, AVSI seeks to go to the heart of the educational crisis that plagues the country, where estimates report that only 24% of the population can read.

The goal is to train qualified primary teachers in line with new standards being set by the South Sudan government, in order to improve the conditions of schools and education, which are poor both in terms of formal training for teachers and materials and structures available to students. The university seeks to enroll both teachers who already work in schools but lack training, as well as recruiting young people who finish high school and have an interest in being educators.
